This is a family event geared for youth ages 7-18 and parents/adults. This aquathon is the third race in the Central Texas Kids Tri Series and is a great event for beginners wanting to work towards a triathlon, experienced racers who want to challenge themselves with a super sprint, and families who want to participate together as a team. Adults can participate as individuals or as a team with a youth. Teams are commonly youth/parent but any adult including a neighbor/uncle/grandparent etc can be a youth’s team member.

USAT sanctioning is pending. Blanco Vista neighborhood has been a popular training area for the Hill Country Tri Club for years. Located midway between Austin and San Antonio on the north side of San Marcos the community is the perfect spot for a new event. Race director, Kathy Rainey, also directs the Hill Country Kids & Family Tri in the Central Texas Kids Tri Series. The Blanco Vista Splash n Dash will be a fun experience for your kids and family that you will want to come back to year after year.

USAT Membership required
Yes. All athletes must be a member of USAT and will be required to provide a USAT membership card along with photo ID at packet pickup. You may purchase a year or one day USAT membership at packet pickup or online at www.usatriathlon.org (print out a card and bring it with you!) You may also purchase a one day membership through online registration. If you pay for a one day USAT membership through online registration, you will still have to fill out the application at packet pickup but you will not owe any money. You may not pick up another racer’s packet except for your child’s. No exceptions! This is USAT’s rule not ours! A parent/guardian will be required to sign a USAT waiver for his/her child
Packet Pickup
Packet Pickup will only be on race morning from 6:00 am to 7:30 am unless the size of the race requires a packet pickup on Friday. Because we are not requiring racers to go to a packet pickup the day before the race we have to require that all racers pay for USAT membership prior to race day. You are required to go online to USAT (www.usatriathlon) and purchase a one day or year long USAT membership, print out the confirmation and bring it with you to the race check-in with your driver’s license OR you are required to pay the one day membership fee on the yellow cheetah website when your register. If you choose the second option you will then have to fill out the application for one day membership at check-in. We are not collecting money on race day for either one day or year long memberships. You may not apply for year long USAT membership at check-in. We are making life easier for you by having packet pickup on race morning at check-in. You have to make things easy on us by purchasing USAT membership prior to race day and bringing proof of membership. This will ensure that race check-in and packet pickup go quickly and smoothly:)

Same course as 2012 – see race website (www.hillcountrytri.org) for course maps and race flyer for detailed description.

Swim
The course starts with a pool swim at McNaughton Pool. No flotation devices are allowed this year even for the 5-6 year old category. A swimmer must be able to swim his/her distance. Swimmers are allowed to hold on to the side of the pool, the lane line, or stand if rest is needed. The swim will be a staggered start with swimmers entering the water every 10 seconds according to their estimated swim times. Faster racers start first in each age category. It is very important that you enter the correct estimated swim time for your child’s race distance. This ensures that slower racers do not have to battle faster racers swimming past/over them. We start the next swim wave (5-6 / 7-8 / 9-10 / 11-12 & 13-15 grouped together) when the current age category is off the bike course. We will have a minimum of three lifeguards present as well as additional volunteers. Swim caps provided in the race packets are mandatory.

Bike/Run
The racer must wear his bib number pinned to his/her shirt or wear a race belt with the number. Bib numbers are assigned by age category. The bike and run courses are closed to car traffic with volunteers and off duty police officers lining the course to ensure safety. We have two cyclists riding the course throughout the race monitoring safety and leading the kid’s category leader. No training wheels are allowed this year even for the 5-6 year age category. No headphones are allowed on the course. EMS and a certified athletic trainer are present at the finish line for first aid and emergency injury care. Your child is responsible for knowing his/her loop count on the bike course. The 7-10 year old kids get very confused. We highly recommend that parents walk to the turn off for additional bike loops or the finish line and help ensure that their child has completed the correct number of bike loops before heading for the finish line. We also highly recommend that you drive, walk or bike the bike course with your child on Friday and make sure they understand how many loops they need to do for their age category and where the turn off is for additional loops or finish line. See race website for course maps and loop count. Please notify us if your child does not bike the correct number as this will take an award away from the deserving athlete.

We have included an optional parent’s mini tri that will start after the kids’ race. This is one of the coolest features of our race!!! Parents and families love the chance to compete in a race together as a team!! Parents watch their kids compete and then kids cheer on their parents. Year after year we have parents and kids who look forward to this race because of the opportunity to train and race together. Rivalries even exist between teams. We do not provide day care for your child while you are racing.

Transition opens at 5:45 am. Body marking and bike safety inspections will take place before the athlete enters the transition area. Adrien is the transition captain. She reserves the right to move your child’s bike to the correct size rack if you do not rack your child’s bike properly. The front or back wheel must touch the ground. We have the appropriately sized racks. Bikes are racked according to age group and size of bike. Consult with Adrien or another transition volunteer if you have questions or problems on race day. Please do not yell at Adrien or our volunteers. They are nice people who will help you. It may take a few minutes but they will help you:) I promise you that every year our transition volunteers get the most positive feedback from racers post race so be nice:)

Every athlete must have a sticker on their bike from Arrowhead Bicycles in Kyle, Jack and Adams, Bicycle Sport Shop or their local shop indicating that their bike has been checked for safety and is the proper size. Please take your child and their bike and helmet to one of these locations for inspection. Helmets are required and will also be checked for proper size and fit. We reserve the right to pull an athlete from the race due to an unsafe or improperly sized bike or helmet.

Body marking will also take place as you exit transition.

Pick up your chip timer for your ankle as you exit transition.

Mandatory pre-race meeting begins at 6:45 am inside the pool area. Transition closes to all racers at 6:45 am sharp. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get to the race site, pick up your timing chip, and set up your transition area. No spectators will be allowed in the transition area during the race. Our volunteers in transition will help your child.

We will have a 2 hour postponement contingency due to bad weather. The race course may be altered due to unsafe conditions. There will be no refunds.

Withdraw/Refund Policy
No refunds.

Spectators
We encourage all parents and supporters to line the course and cheer on the racers. Our new course design enables parents to easily cheer at different points but we ask everyone to please stay on the side of the street across from the pool and school on the bike and run course. If you want to view transition after the swim, the best way is to exit the pool and go around the back of the pool to get close. Then you will have to run back around the pool to see the child on the bike course. This is sligtly inconvenient to the parent who wants to see everything up close but for safety reasons we have to set the course up this way.
